Trademark Classes Explained UK

Understand all 45 trademark classes and choose the right ones for your business

Quick Answer

Trademark classes categorise goods and services into 45 classes (Classes 1-34 for goods, 35-45 for services). Choosing the right classes is essential - too few and your trademark is unprotected; too many and you waste money. Our experts help you select the correct classes as part of our trademark registration packages from £490.

When you apply for a trademark, you must specify which classes of goods or services your trademark will cover. This is one of the most important decisions in the application process - and one where many businesses make costly mistakes.

What Are Trademark Classes?

The Nice Classification system divides all goods and services into 45 classes. Classes 1-34 cover goods (physical products), while classes 35-45 cover services. Each class has a broad heading and thousands of specific items within it.

Your trademark is only protected in the classes you register. If someone uses a similar mark in a different class, they may not be infringing your trademark. This is why choosing the right classes is critical.

How Much Do Extra Classes Cost?

Your first class is included in our base fee. Each additional class costs £100. This covers the UK IPO fee for additional classes plus our professional handling. View our full pricing to understand the costs.
